DENIS FRANCIS DALY (Penny) was born on the 20th January 1925 at Bangalow NSW to Jeremiah (1892-1962) and Mary Daly -neé Fogarty (1899-1979). He was the fourth born child of eight children – Bernard, John, Ernest (Vince), Denis (Penny), Mary, Gerald, Thomas and Patricia.
Denis met his future wife Ida McCormack in Bundaberg, she was the sister of his friend. Denis and Ida were married in 1950 and moved to 'Doon Doon' Commissioners Creek (NSW) to work as dairy farmers where they raised their eight children- Andrew, Maree, Irene, Denise, Michael, Theresa, Matthew and Annette. They moved to Uki—still in the same area—in 1965, continuing to dairy farm on the property until ill health made giving up farming a necessity. Ida and Denis stayed on the farm, dividing and sharing the property amongst the children and their families, some who still live there today. In their retirement, they travelled together in Australia enjoying camp drafts and spending time with family before returning to their loved Uki.
Penny was a well loved and respected member of the community, known to be a man of his word, in an era when a handshake was a contract. The local grandstand bears his name
Penny passed away on the 28th December 1985 and rests in the Murwillumbah Lawn Cemetery where his beloved Ida joined him in 2023. ?
- Denis’s parents Jeremiah and Mary are buried in Murwillumbah Catholic Cemetery
